Many people right now are experiencing sadness or grief. And many are facing sickness or loss. Here is how Safe Conversations can help in these times.

When you want or need to talk about your sadness, ask someone “Is now a good time to talk about how sad I am?” Check whether it’s a good time because then you will have their undivided attention. This is important when you need to talk about something sensitive and deeply felt. Also, use “I” language. Say things like “I feel…” or “I think…”

What about when someone is talking to you about their sadness? Mirror back what they say, and listen rather than talk about your own feelings. Ask, “Is there more about that?” until there is no more.

This will help calm the brain for both of you and help you talk about sadness and loss in these terrible times.
